After the Church’s garage sale in June 2012, we had a few suitcases left and we were looking for somewhere to donate them. As Doctors Without Borders had plenty, they suggested we donate them to Angels of Mercy. When we took them to their shop, they had several pillowcase dresses there. They explained that they made them from donated pillowcases, and they were taken to Africa or any other country that was in need as many little girls didn’t have anything to wear. We decided we could do that…so we started dress a girl!
The congregation was asked to check out garage sales for pillowcases. We then found some missionaries from Robert’s Wesleyan who took the pillowcases when they went to Africa, the Congo, Malawi, Senegal, Haiti, Brandi, and Belize plus we often took a supply to Angels of Mercy who also gave them to those going abroad. We started collecting recyclable bottles to pay for the supplies.
Since we started we have donated a total of 1,527 dresses plus 121 t-shirts!
In 2013, we also started making prayer blankets after a relative received one before surgery. We continue to make prayer blankets and have donated them to those having surgery, those who are quite sick, veterans at the VA in Batavia, Unity Hospital’s maternity section, dialysis center at Unity, the elderly, hospice centers, cancer centers and the Children’s Closet at St Mary’s Hospital.
So far we have donated 327 blankets!
There are usually 5 of us monthly, there is room for more to get involved! All are welcome!
